  • Mykel – Hometown Runaway EP

    Mykel – Hometown Runaway EP

Los Angeles via Salt Lake City powerhouse vocalist and musician Mykel has officially unveiled her debut EP Hometown Runaway, a six-track project that resonates with raw honesty and emotional depth. Released last month, the record captures the turbulence of leaving home, confronting inner battles, and embracing new beginnings. Mykel celebrated the milestone with a live performance at Permanent Records Roadhouse in Los Angeles on November 13, a fitting stage for an artist whose voice and vision demand to be heard in full.

The EP is a sweeping exploration of themes that cut to the core of human experience: ego death, imposter syndrome, faith, and self-worth. Mykel’s commanding vocals soar over lush, expansive production, creating a soundscape that is both cinematic and intimate. Collaborating with GRAMMY-nominated producer Yang Tan (Janelle Monáe) and multi-platinum engineer Gehring Miller (Giveon, Ella Mai), she recorded at the legendary Record Plant Studios in LA, ensuring the project carries both technical polish and emotional grit.

About the New Release — At its heart, Hometown Runaway is a story of rediscovery. Mykel admits that she nearly gave up on music, but hitting rock bottom became the catalyst for her artistic rebirth. The EP blends pop sensibilities with R&B textures, offering a space for her to redefine herself without the weight of industry expectations. As she explains, “I wanted to take all the nuances of my journey and put it into a body of work that represented me. Not what the industry or society wanted of me or told me would sell.” This declaration of independence makes the project both liberating and vulnerable.

The title track, Hometown Runaway, serves as a love letter to the many facets of her identity. It’s a song that embraces contradiction, acknowledging that one can love both their hometown and their adopted city, and that uncertainty is part of the journey. Mykel describes it as “an anthem for sitting in the nuance of who you are,” a message that resonates with anyone who has left behind familiarity to chase something bigger. The track balances pride with bittersweet reflection, embodying the courage it takes to leave everything behind.

Among the standout songs is How Do You Know, which Mykel calls her “405 spiral song.” It’s an anxious yet danceable anthem, perfect for long drives and restless nights. Critics have praised its ability to transform unease into motion—Melodic Magazine noted that “Mykel transforms anxiety into motion,” while Voxwave Magazine highlighted its existential undertones, describing it as “a soundtrack to inner anxiety that still makes you move and smile.” This duality—finding joy in chaos—is a hallmark of Mykel’s artistry.

Another highlight is Brace For Impact, the EP’s lead single released in September. Written after surviving a near-fatal car accident, the track meditates on mortality, gratitude, and resilience. With soulful conviction, Mykel delivers lyrics that feel both intimate and monumental. Other Side Reviews captured its essence perfectly: “Mykel’s voice, commanding, soulful, and unflinchingly honest, anchors the track with a gravitas that feels both intimate and monumental.” It’s a song that doesn’t just recount survival—it celebrates the strength found in vulnerability.

About The Artist — Raised Mormon in Salt Lake City, Utah, and now based in Los Angeles, Mykel’s journey is as layered as her music. With a background in musical theater, she brings a dramatic flair to her performances, combining grandiose vocals with storytelling that captivates audiences. Her voice has echoed through Staples Center and Dodger Stadium, and her songs have appeared in Lifetime movies, BRAVO shows, and Love Island. Yet despite these achievements, she remains a self-proclaimed industry outsider, determined to carve her own path. Her sound blends the emotional grit of H.E.R. with the powerhouse delivery of Adele, rooted in R&B but sculpted into pop that feels deeply personal.

Our Thoughts — With Hometown Runaway, Mykel delivers more than just a debut EP—she offers a manifesto of resilience, truth, and self-discovery. Each track feels like a chapter in her journal, chronicling the highs and lows of leaving home, confronting faith, and embracing imperfection. What makes this release so compelling is its refusal to chase trends; instead, it delivers messages that are timeless and deeply human. Mykel’s conviction shines through every lyric, and her ability to balance vulnerability with strength makes this project a powerful introduction to her artistry.

Hometown Runaway is not just an EP—it’s a statement, and one that positions Mykel as a voice to watch in the indie pop and R&B landscape.

  • Queen Quail’s ‘Southside’: A Journey Through Resilience

Queen Quail’s ‘Southside’: A Journey Through Resilience

Indie pop/folk singer-songwriter Queen Quail unveils her haunting and resilient new single Southside. It is accompanied by a striking visual that deepens its emotional resonance. The track serves as a powerful introduction to her now released debut EP Narcissus, available now across major streaming platforms. Queen Quail presents six carefully crafted songs. She explores themes of longing, identity, and philosophy. Her music also delves into the search for home. She weaves together sweeping production with vocals that are both vulnerable and commanding. This debut marks a significant moment in her artistic journey. It offers listeners a glimpse into a world where fragility and strength coexist.

Southside is a meditation on restlessness and the grief of lost time. Yet, it propels forward with a sense of determination. Queen Quail explains, “It’s about being haunted by an experience. This happens even after trying so hard to process it and get over it. I guess sometimes things just stick with you even years after. I like the idea that even if you’re somewhat a victim of circumstance, you still have agency. You can choose a different path and take responsibility for the environments you put yourself in.” Her words reflect the track’s duality—acknowledging pain while affirming the possibility of growth and renewal.

About the New Release — The song builds with a quiet intensity, gradually unfolding into a grand, optimistic finale that embodies perseverance. Queen Quail continues, “The track laments this feeling of not being able to escape something, but then ends with this big explosion of hope and resilience.” This progression mirrors the emotional arc of healing: the weight of memory giving way to the light of possibility. It is a sonic journey that resonates with anyone who has struggled to move forward while carrying the echoes of the past.

The accompanying video, directed by NYC filmmaker Sara Lovering, adds another layer of depth to Southside. Through carefully composed shots, Lovering captures the tension between light and shadow, intimacy and distance, reflecting the song’s themes of internal conflict and resolution. Queen Quail notes, “I think the shots she got for this video were so essential in tracing out my visual world—these ideas of light and dark, close and far, internal conflict and tensions are so present in this song and the visuals she created.” The video becomes not just a companion piece but an extension of the song’s emotional landscape.

Her debut EP Narcissus continues this exploration of resilience, self-discovery, and overcoming. The project is produced by David Thornton. It is mixed by Michael Kümper. Huntley Miller (Bon Iver, Sylvan Esso) mastered the project. It balances shimmering, dreamlike production with plainspoken storytelling. Queen Quail explains, “Writing these songs helped me figure out who I was becoming. I wanted to use my own voice without losing myself.” The EP is both deeply personal and universally relatable, offering listeners a space to reflect on their own transformations.

Much of the writing for Narcissus emerged from solitary sessions during a turbulent relationship. Queen Quail recalls, “Around that time I was also reading a lot of Freud, Lacan, and philosophy. These readings definitely slipped into the lyrics. They influenced the way I thought about memory, love, and the unconscious. I also considered how capitalism plays into these concepts.” It was initially a very private practice. Gradually, it became a reckoning with the choices I’d made in my twenties.” These influences lend her work a philosophical edge, blending emotional honesty with intellectual curiosity.

Her earlier single Last Night offered a glimpse into this evolving artistry. Led by a gentle guitar riff, the track explores mortality and the strangeness of inhabiting a body, wrapped in a nostalgic haze. After performing with Dan English of Porches, who encouraged her to embrace touring, the song gained further momentum, landing on Ones to Watch’s coveted Now Watching playlist. Together with Southside, it demonstrates Queen Quail’s ability to balance introspection with accessibility, crafting songs that linger long after they end.

About The Artist — Queen Quail is the creative project of Berlin-based songwriter Kirstin Edwards, who was raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Growing up by Lake Michigan, she developed a layered, intimate sound shaped by both her classical training on cello and her explorations on guitar. Her move to Berlin introduced her to a vibrant indie scene, while her Midwestern roots kept her grounded in DIY traditions. The name Queen Quail was inspired by a moment in Berlin’s botanical gardens, where Kirstin encountered a “Zwergwachtel” or dwarf quail. The bird’s quiet focus mirrored her own shy yet energetic nature, becoming a symbol of her artistic identity.

Our Thoughts — Her debut EP Narcissus embodies this duality—balancing the shimmer of indie pop with the intimacy of alternative folk. Across six tracks, she crafts a sound that is expansive yet vulnerable, dreamy yet direct. Produced by David Thornton and mastered by Huntley Miller, the EP carries the restless energy of Berlin while remaining rooted in Midwestern honesty. Supported by Initiative Musik, Queen Quail is carving out a space that bridges two worlds, creating music that holds the quiet pull of memory against the urgency of the present. With Narcissus, she invites listeners into a sonic world that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Exploring ‘Feels So Right’: Edwina van Kuyk’s Vulnerable New EP

Singer-songwriter Edwina van Kuyk (pronounced kow-k) makes a striking return with her most personal and vulnerable project to date — Feels So Right, a three-track EP that explores the art of surrender, the strength of friendship, and the courage to trust oneself. Released on October 28 across all streaming platforms, the release marks a pivotal moment in van Kuyk’s career, showcasing not only her growth as a musician but also her evolution as a storyteller who dares to embrace life’s chaos and transform it into beauty.

At its core, Feels So Right is a meditation on letting go and following intuition, themes that resonate deeply with van Kuyk’s own journey. “Life doesn’t always make sense,” she reflects, “but when something feels right, you have to go with it.” This philosophy permeates the EP, which is sonically rich and emotionally grounded. Nostalgic vocals intertwine with soulful grooves and radiant melodies, creating a soundscape that feels both timeless and contemporary. Each track glows with a balance of vulnerability and confidence, inviting listeners to step into van Kuyk’s world of honesty and self-discovery.

About the New Release — The opening track, “Tailspin,” sets the tone with its metaphorical exploration of surrender. Using the imagery of an aircraft spiraling out of control, van Kuyk turns turbulence into catharsis, offering a powerful reflection on the necessity of embracing uncertainty rather than resisting it. The song’s layered production and soaring vocals capture the tension between fear and release, ultimately reminding listeners that chaos can be a gateway to clarity and growth.

Following this, “Never Not To Know Each Other Again” delivers the emotional centerpiece of the EP. Written in memory of her late friend Anouk, whom she met during a songwriting retreat, the track is both a tribute and a testament to the transformative power of friendship. With heartfelt lyrics and tender instrumentation, van Kuyk honors the way Anouk’s creativity and warmth shaped her artistic outlook. “Anouk taught me to trust my gut and believe in my music,” she shares. The song beautifully illustrates how strangers can become family, leaving indelible marks that continue to inspire long after they are gone.

The EP closes with its title track, “Feels So Right,” an anthem of confidence and creative freedom. Here, van Kuyk sheds the weight of external opinions and embraces the joy of creating from intuition. “I’ve spent years listening to other people’s opinions,” she admits. “Now I just want to make music that feels right to me.” The track radiates empowerment, encouraging listeners to silence doubt and lean into the authenticity of their own voices. It is a fitting conclusion to an EP that celebrates self-trust and artistic liberation.

Across all three songs, van Kuyk achieves a delicate balance between emotional vulnerability and grounded production. The EP’s sonic palette mirrors its thematic core: the act of letting go, trusting oneself, and finding peace in the unknown. With its intimate yet universal message, Feels So Right becomes more than just a collection of songs — it is a reminder to create, to live, and to love for the purest reason of all: because it feels right. The project was written by Edwina van Kuyk, Cian O’Donoghue, and Gabrielle Deschamps (on “Tailspin”), produced and mixed by Cian O’Donoghue, and mastered by Pete Maher, ensuring a polished sound that still retains its heartfelt sincerity.

About The Artist — Edwina van Kuyk has steadily built a reputation as one of Ireland’s most compelling emerging voices. Her recent single, “Never Not To Know Each Other Again,” garnered strong national radio support, earning airplay on RTÉ 2FM, 98FM, and Today FM. Her music has also been featured on influential playlists such as The Last Mixed Tape, IMRO’s New Music Ireland, MCD, and Golden Plec, cementing her place in the contemporary Irish music landscape.

Beyond her recordings, van Kuyk’s artistry shines in live performance. Her collaborations as a vocalist and songwriter span both Irish and international projects, while her global reach has taken her to stages in the USA, including Nashville’s iconic Bluebird Café and Austin’s Continental Club, as well as live performances on Argentina’s Perros de la Calle radio.

  • It’s Lovely, Come On In: Debut Album by thredd – Out Now via Scenic Route

It’s Lovely, Come On In: Debut Album by thredd – Out Now via Scenic Route

The debut album, It’s Lovely, Come On In, has been released by thredd through the independent label Scenic Route. The record was created during a unique and spontaneous residency at Laylow in West London, where new songs were written and performed live each week.

The band’s sound, described by them as “cold pop,” has been shaped by atmospheric textures, catchy melodies, and a strong emotional core. The album’s release has been met with growing interest, and a UK tour has been scheduled to follow, including a headline show at Spanners in London on 18 September, where BLACK FONDU will also be performing.

About The New Release — The project was formed by musicians Will Lister, Max Winter, and Imogen and The Knife. Their collaboration was sparked during a four-week residency in November 2023, when Laylow’s basement was transformed into a temporary studio. Each week, new songs were written and performed without delay, allowing instinct to guide the creative process. The result was a sound that felt immediate and emotionally raw, with little time given to overthinking or refinement. This process gave birth to what the band now calls “cold pop,” a genre that blends moody textures with direct, melodic songwriting.

Before the residency, the trio had already been working together in a shared South London studio. Their strengths had been developed over time: Will’s detailed drum programming and production, Max’s natural sense of harmony and structure, and Imogen’s lyrical depth and vocal presence. These elements were brought together in a way that felt both familiar and new. The music that emerged was designed to be felt instantly, yet it was also crafted to reveal more with each listen. This balance has helped thredd stand out in the UK’s vibrant music scene.

The album itself moves between different moods and styles. Tracks like Horseshow combine post-triphop rhythms with layered harmonies and haunting vocals. We Don’t Speak Anymore was written in a single afternoon and delivers a sharp, emotional punch. Something For My Head explores themes of anxious love, while the title track repeats a hypnotic phrase born from frustration. The lead single, Party, is filled with chaotic energy and joy, while Funny Girl strips everything back to its emotional core, with lyrics taken from a personal notes app entry.

Throughout the album, the influence of Laylow’s underground setting can be felt. The space, with its maze-like corridors and hidden rooms, encouraged fast, instinctive creativity. The songs reflect themes of exhaustion, release, and the simple joy of making music for its own sake. The band has said the album is for people “up for a party, down for a cry,” and that duality is present in every track. The result is a record that feels both spontaneous and deeply considered, capturing a moment in time with honesty and heart.

The record has been praised for its emotional honesty, sonic depth, and the way it captures the spirit of collaboration. With its blend of late-night indie, synth-pop, and stripped-back songwriting, the album offers something for a wide range of listeners. Whether heard alone or in a crowded room, the music invites people in with warmth and intensity. It is a debut that feels both personal and universal, marking the beginning of something special for Thredd.
